he Sera Jey Monastery where\u00a0Chris Beck<\/a>\u00a0(my teaching partner) and I stayed was about 50 miles west of Mysore in Southern India. The Sera Jey monastery itself is actually one of three monasteries in a concentrated area\u00a0a short distance from the first\u00a0camp (I\u2019ll describe this setup in a future post).<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

This settlement\u00a0consists of\u00a0many\u00a0buildings including\u00a0a guest house,\u00a0where we stayed, which had\u00a0very nice rooms for us.<\/p>\n

While I\u2019ve heard that there is a lack of green space in some of the urban areas in India, this was not the case in and around the monastery. \u00a0There was a very lush\u00a0courtyard just outside the monastery hotel and tons of farmland in the immediate area. Google Maps shows that there is a large area of forest beyond the farmland, but I didn\u2019t explore that far (next time!)<\/p>\n

The monasteries house thousands of monks and school age boys, and therefore\u00a0consists of dormitories, temples, teaching areas, shops, etc.<\/p>\n

Our main lecture room was almost across the hall from our dorm rooms and the meals were served right above us in an open air part of the hotel. \u00a0Amazingly (to me anyway), we had very good internet access except for the three\u00a0or so hour-long daily electrical blackouts. \u00a0By no means did we live the monastic life, but it was nice having accustomed comforts!<\/p>\n
