{"id":36,"date":"2020-04-28T21:59:45","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T01:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/danc365-spring2020\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2020-04-28T21:59:45","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T01:59:45","slug":"dance-in-times-of-isolation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/danc365-spring2020\/dance-in-times-of-isolation\/","title":{"rendered":"Dance in Times of Isolation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Dance in Times of Isolation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Due: Monday, April 6 @ 5 PM<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Assignment Guidelines<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During these extraordinary times of social distancing and isolation due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, renown dance artist, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has invited people to engage with her seminal 1983 work<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vlLZExpgBOY\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosas danst Rosas<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a shorter version of the chair section, Rosas, can be found<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosasdanstrosas.be\/background\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This invitation is similar to the Re:Rosas project she launched in 2013 when she invited anyone to create their own versions of the dance, following a plagiarism case with Beyonc\u00e9 (see additional resources at the end of this document).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this assignment, you will follow De Keersmaeker tutorials to learn the choreography and then create your own version of the dance. To hear young Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker talk about her choreographic ideas go to min. 05:19-07:50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guidelines for your adaptation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Length<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: around 1 minute<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methodology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Learn the movements as taught in the tutorials. Manipulate the material and variations to create your own version. Maintain the integrity of the original choreographic concept and movement material.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: intentionally choose a location for your work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You may use the original music provided in the tutorials. You may change the music. Or you may use silence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dancers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You can dance alone. You can dance with others. You can dance with dancers and non-dancers. You can collaborate online, ie: through zoom, to create a virtual version with multiple dancers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documentation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Film your dance. Upload it to our Google Drive Folder in the folder titled Dance in Times of Isolation. DUE: MONDAY, APRIL 6 @ 5 PM<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: View everyone\u2019s work and jot down in your movement research notebook:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Why did you choose your specific location for the dance? How did you go about making your own variation of Rosas? How did the specificity of your current circumstances inform your work? How and why did you choose silence, sound, or music? What was most interesting to you about the process? What surprised you? How would you further develop the piece?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About your peers&#8217; work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: What was most interesting to you? What did you notice about the way in which they manipulated the original choreography to make it their own? What is a moment that you saw them moving in a way that you found unexpected? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did you experience their site even though you were not physically in their site. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What meaning did the piece evoke for you?
