The severity of symptoms varies greatly, but all people with autism have some symptoms in the areas of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Social Interactions and Relationships<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Verbal and Nonverbal Communication<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Limited Interests in Activities or Play<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0(<\/em><em>WebMD)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What is AAT?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an intervention that uses animal interaction to help individuals with health problems or developmental disabilities recover and cope with their symptoms. The therapy is believed to have a variety of benefits, including personal and social development, increased self-esteem, improved mental health, better social skills and increased empathy and nurturing skills (Rovner, 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/AAT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-284\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/AAT-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"AAT\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/AAT-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/AAT-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/AAT.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How does AAT work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The improvements in symptoms from AAT stem from the interaction with animals. Some forms of AAT like equine therapy involve taking care of the animals. In many cases therapists practice their usual techniques like applied behavioral analysis and speech therapy while using the animal to facilitate the therapy and increase the patient\u2019s engagement and motivation. While the improvements are visible in the children\u2019s interactions these benefits are difficult to quantify and prove because they are often unique to the individual. As a result the therapy is undervalued and more research is necessary to quantify the benefits of the therapy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This podcast by NPR discusses the impact AAT has had on several different kinds of patients including Ryan, a 9 year old boy with autism. <\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-279-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/20120305_me_06.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/20120305_me_06.mp3\">https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/20120305_me_06.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/Ryan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-288 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/Ryan-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan\" width=\"376\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/Ryan-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/Ryan-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/Ryan.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coleman, his speech pathologist, used to see Ryan in a more formal office setting but since he started horseback riding she says, &#8220;I get greater engagement, greater alertness, more language, more processing, all those things.&#8221; Ryan&#8217;s mother also claims to notice improvements not only in his speech but also in his ability to follow direction dissuading many safety concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These benefits can be attributed to oxytocin, a naturally occurring hormone known for its social bondin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g and anti-stress effects. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odendaal and Meintjes (2003) found that interacting with animals increases people\u2019s level of oxytocin. \u00a0As a result <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animals help clinicians go under the radar of a child&#8217;s consciousness, because the child is much more at ease and willing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Johnson, a nurse who heads the Research Center for Human\/Animal Interaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine explains that oxytocin not only helps us feel happy and trusting but also \u201chas some powerful effects for us in the body&#8217;s ability to be in a state of readiness to heal, and also to grow new cells\u201d (Rovner, 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Oxytocin-Autism Connection<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/oxytocin_lonely_boy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-289 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/oxytocin_lonely_boy-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"oxytocin_lonely_boy\" width=\"353\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/oxytocin_lonely_boy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/oxytocin_lonely_boy-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/cognitiveneuroc\/files\/2015\/11\/oxytocin_lonely_boy.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new study, by researchers at Stanford University, investigated the role of oxytocin in autism. \u00a0The investigators looked at blood levels of oxytocin in 79 children with ASD, 52 of their unaffected siblings and 62 children in families not affected by autism. Low, medium and high oxytocin blood levels occurred at similar rates in all three groups. These findings suggest that oxytocin deficiency does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause autism (Parker et al, 2014).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they found that higher levels of oxytocin correlated with better social functioning. Children with the lowest levels of oxytocin had the most-severe social impairments while those with the highest levels had minimal social difficulties. Autism Speaks\u2019 Chief Science Officer commented:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cThis definitely adds strength to the evidence that oxytocin could improve social behavior in those who have deficits in this area, including those who have autism\u201d (Autism Speaks, 2014, August, 4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequently Autism Speaks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0decided to study if spraying oxytocin into the nose could increased social responsiveness in children with autism. However, when researchers gave mice pups oxytocin, their brains reduced sensitivity\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the hormone and the mice grew up to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Huang, 2014)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hey suggest that the inconsistent results might be because oxytocin delivered by nasal spray doesn\u2019t reach all areas of the brain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
