Between 2009 and 2018, twenty UR students participated with Dr. Baughan in the Hac\u0131musalar H\u00f6y\u00fck excavation project<\/a> in Elmal\u0131, Turkey, under the directorship of Dr. \u0130lknur \u00d6zgen (\u0392ilkent University, Ankara) and with the support of UR’s School of Arts & Sciences. East End Cemetery, 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since 2017, Classics 220 Introduction to Archaeology has been affiliated with the Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory<\/a>, a group of UR and VCU faculty, students, and staff working together with community members to restore and document historic African American cemeteries in the Richmond area. Student work has contributed to an online map<\/a> as well as a searchable archive<\/a> and collection of biographical narratives<\/a> for East End Cemetery. Thanks to a Digital Pedagogy Grant in 2022, students have also begun 3D-scanning grave monuments with an iPad Pro and have started at East End Cemetery Collection on Sketchfab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Fall 2024, Classics 220 students assisted with headstone recovery and biographical research at neighboring Evergreen Cemetery<\/a> and contributed research to the Cemetery Collaboratory Archive<\/a>. They also conducted a surface survey and excavated shovel test pits on campus, around the Wilton Center: for the full report, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Classics 220 students have also partnered with the Richmond Society of the Archaeological Institute of America<\/a> to create hands-on activities for archaeology fairs celebrating International Archaeology Day<\/a>, at the Science Museum of Virginia (Diggin’ RVA, 2016<\/a>) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Dig It!, 2017<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In Fall 2020, Classics 302 Roman Art and Archaeology students collaborated with Latin 101 students to create a digital exhibition<\/a> of Late Roman coins in the Lora <\/a>Robins Gallery<\/a>: https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/romancoins\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n
