In Fall 2023, the collaborative class project for ARCH 310 (Archaeology of Death) was focused on Saint James Cemetery in Varina, Henrico County. With the help of UR’s GIS Operations Manager (Beth Zizzamia) and other members of the Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory, we mapped all visible markers and unmarked burial depressions, conducted archival research to find documents for other persons who were buried at the cemetery for whom no markers exist today, created a detailed catalog of handmade concrete headstones, and scanned some headstones to create 3D models.
