Archaeology lectures on campus, Spring 2023

The Classical Studies department will be hosting four interesting lectures on ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology on campus this semester:

  1. Chris Motz (Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics here at UR) will present “Connecting Ecology, Economy, and Craft in the Roman Fish-Salting Industry” on Wednesday, February 8 at 6 pm in Jepson 118 (co-hosted by AIA Richmond)
  2. Emilia Oddo (Assistant Professor of Classical Studies at Tulane) will present “In case of emergency, break pots: use and function of Marine Style pottery in Minoan Crete” on Thursday, March 16 at 6 pm (location TBA, co-hosted by AIA Richmond)
  3. Kara Cooney (Professor of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA, National Geographic Explorer, and popular Egyptologist) will present “When Women Ruled the World” on Friday, March 31 at 6 pm in Ukrop Auditorium, preceded by an open house reception at the new Ancient World Gallery (Humanities 419) beginning  at 4:30 pm (Thirteenth Annual Stuart L. Wheeler Gallery of the Ancient World Lecture)
  4. Eric Cline (Professor of Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at George Washington Univ., National Geographic Explorer, and NEH Public Scholar) will present “1177 BC Revisited: Updating the Late Bronze Age Collapse” on Thursday, April 13 at 6 pm in Jepson 118 (co-hosted by AIA Richmond)
