Exploring Academic and Career Interests

Students from two of the four SSIR programs this fall participated in a day-long retreat at URDowntown, called Destinations 2012.  It is a retreat modeled after the popular Career Development Center’s Destination Unknown retreat that occurs each year.

Students in the SSIR programs participated in several activities that helped them explore their career, life and academic interests and passions, assess their personality and skills through the Strong Interest Inventory and had fun getting to know their peers and the faculty member better.  Staff members from the CDC led the retreat.

Check out some pictures from Destinations 2012:

“Cuba: Rhythm in Motion”

Interested in the Salsa Meets Jazz Sophomore Scholars in Residence program?  Check out the documentary that Dr. Mike Davison has written, edited and produced that traces the history of Cuban music and its blending with American jazz and popular music starting from the mid-19th century.

Apply to be a Resident Assistant for a Living Learning Community

RA applications are now available for our Sophomore Scholars in Residence (SSIR), Living Learning Communities (LLC) and Special Interest (SI) programs for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.  Being the RA for one of these communities, is a great way to get involved in living learning communities next year, be a role model to those participating in the program, work with faculty and staff, become a student leader within Richmond and Westhampton Colleges, and help shape the direction of these communities at Richmond.

Download the RA application here.  More information about each of the programs is available at Living Learning Programs.

The applications are due to Office of Living Learning Programs, Richmond Hall 113, by 5:00 p.m. on November 20, 2009.

Another frequently asked question we have been getting:

Q: I am a WC student and want to apply to be the RA and be employed by RC (or vice versa).  Is that possible?
A: Yes! All of our communities can have either a male or female RA, no matter which college employs them.

Modlin Center director moves to Skidmore

David Howson, Interim Executive Director of the Modlin Center for the Arts and Sophomore Scholars in Residence professor, will be leaving Richmond at the end of the fall semester.  The Collegian wrote an excellent article about David, read it here.

The Opening Nights program has been a popular SSIR program and has been very active this fall semester taking utilize David’s skills and talents before he leaves for New York.  The Opening Nights program will be keeping connected with David throughout the spring semester with their independent study by virtual classroom in Lakeview.

We are very sad to see David go, but are also excited for this new opportunity that he has.

We hoping to offer the Opening Nights SSIR program again in the future with another UR faculty member.
