Both Run DMC and Nicki Minaj use style to make an impression on the world beyond hip hop culture. Run DMC’s line “And out of sneakers I did speak” speaks to the importance of creating an image in hip hop culture. The sneakers that they wear is more than a style of shoe to wear on their feet, it has become a part of their group personality and this image has a voice in the group’s lyrics. Run DMC goes on to define how their style brings meaning into their lyrics in the lines “My Adidas only bring good news/ And they’re not used as felon shoes”, which shows that their style has an underlying message of positivity that they also bring to the world through their music. The message they associate with their image that later became iconic in hip hop culture challenges the stereotypes mainstream America of hip hop culture. In their lines “I stepped on stage, at Live Aid/ All the people gave and the poor got paid” the group shows how their message and the iconic image that goes with it has reached those across the world and made a positive impact in the lives of others at the Live Ad concert, which raised relief funds for a famine in Ethiopia.
