PETE has funds at its disposal to support activities that invigorate teaching. This past academic year it awarded 14 travel, workshop and materials grants ranging from $170 to $4400. These grants are awarded on a rolling deadline. In addition, PETE provided 10 individual summer grants ranging from $1800 to $3000. A call for summer applications is made in January of each year, with an early March due date.
PETE supports four basic types of projects: travel and materials, course and curriculum development, visiting speakers, and summer stipends. These grants are intended to increase the applicant’s understanding and mastery of teaching or to establish better conditions for the practice of teaching. The balance of PETE’s interest is tilted toward the craft rather then the content of teaching. It does not fund research or projects aimed primarily at the mastery of subject matter.
The key to a successful application to PETE is to explain, in lay terms, the important changes a project will bring to the way you (and others) teach.
