1. In his article, Porter discusses the transition into a period of significant literature production and dispersion and he notes some of the benefits, as well as some concerns people had about this. Going off of that and based on the rest of his article, do you think the presented problem at the end, that “people began picking up beliefs from their readings like apples from a barrel” holds any substance or true cause for concern at this time?
2. Graffigny depicts Spaniards, French and Peruvian people in the opening segments of her novel. What do these depictions illustrate about French perspectives on these groups and to what extent can the novel’s characterizations be used to understand possible French conceptions and misconceptions of these groups?
