Thank you for including Lois W., the cofounder of Al-Anon Family Groups in your book. Lois and her neighbor, Anne B. launched Al-Anon in the attic of Lois and Bill’s home in Bedford Hills, NY with 87 index cards of Family or Non-A.A. Groups amd individual contacts given to them by the Alcoholics Anonymous General Service Office. Lois was also instrumental in starting Alateen, a Twelve Step support program under the umbrella of the Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. for teenagers affected by a relative or friend’s drinking. Today, Al-Anon Family Groups meet in 133 countries around the world. There are nearly 25,000 Al-Anon and Alateen groups worldwide.

Lois W. and the early pioneers learned that alcoholism is a systemic illness and that the principles of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous could greatly benefit family members affected by another person’s drinking. In Al-Anon, we learn to have compassion and to be supportive of the drinker’s recovery. We do this by applying the Twelve Steps to our own lives and by keeping the focus on ourselves so that we can change our own attitudes and behavior whether or not the drinker continues to drink.

Although not outgoing and gregarious by nature, Lois W. and Anne B. and the early Al-Anon volunteers worked dilegently to establish the Al-Anon Family Groups. Her persistence and belief that the family members need treatment and recovery has restored the lives of countless family members around the world. Her legacy of compassion for the drinker, understanding of alcoholism as an illness affecting everyone close to the drinker, and the importance of applying the spiritual principles of the 12 Steps to our lives continues to aid the recovery of family members of problem drinkers and alcoholics around the world. Al-Anon will celebrate its 60th anniversary in May 2011 thanks to the tireless efforts of Lois W.
