Amelia Earhart: Bold Achiever of Mystery

Oops!  We had to remove the hero profile you’re looking for because it appears in our book Heroic Leadership: An Influence Taxonomy of 100 Exceptional Individuals, published by Routledge in 2013.

Our contract at Routledge required us to remove many of our profiles on our blog.  But we do have other hero profiles and information about heroes on the menu bar located on the right side of this page.  Check it out!

In the mean time, please accept our apologies.

  1. Amelia Earhart was a truly remarkable woman in the fact that she wasn’t afraid to go against social norms in a time that was still considered to be a male dominated world. Earhart fearlessly threw herself head first into a profession that, at the time, had no other female pilots. In essence, one could argue that she completely shattered the “glass ceiling” for future women to come. She could be used as a precedent for future working women who refused to take a passive role in society. Amelia Earhart is, and will forever be, considered a hero in the eyes of many for her breaking of gender barriers, courage, and sheer determination. While it is truly a shame that she died at such a young age, at least there is comfort in the fact that she passed away while doing something she loved.

  2. Just like Althea Gibson and Babe Zaharias, Amelia Earhert is a strong woman who have a goal, a passion, a dream in life and persistently strive to meet them. They are heroes not only because of their achievements. They are hero primarily because there is no obstacle, no social pressure and no fear too great that would deter them from following their predetermined paths. I believe that their significant individual actions combine to be a powerful driving force behind the collective change towards a more equal world.

  3. I love Amelia Earhart. 😀 Not only is she one of the most Romantic and intriguing mysteries of our age, but she was an incredible woman; a product of the “Flapper” culture of the 20s, she presaged the advent of Women’s Lib in the 60s. Her adventurous lifestyle, her attitude toward sex and marriage– imagine keeping her real name!– and her belief in gender equality put her far ahead of even many women living in the 21st century. Great article, Scotty and George. 🙂

  4. Amelia Earhart is definitely one of my favorite inspirational figures in history since I learned of her at a very young age. Her views on sex, marriage, and equality were way ahead of her time and she paved the way for women across the country. The mystery surrounding her disappearance, although tragic, only adds to the heroism that she possesses.

  5. Individuals who challenge the status quo are often seen as heroes because it takes an immense amount of courage to go against what is considered the norm. I consider Amelia Earhart a hero because she wasn’t held back by the gender stereotypes of her time. Even though her story had a tragic ending, she can be an inspiration to women everywhere because of her strength and determination to achieve her dreams.
