FAQs

Hello, how’s everyone’s summer sofar? I was terribly sick and spent three weeks in the hospital… so glad to get back home and start blogging again! As for this post, I have some FAQs for you, which are collected from questions asked by you and other first year spiders. Hope they are helpful, and feel free to add your own question in the comments below.

Also, please remember to check your spidermail regularly! Important emails from the Registrar’s Office and other UR programs will be sent only to your spidermail account.

Q: Should I include URAWARE and Lib 100 in my first 4 courses?
A: No, these courses meet for brief periods and do not count towards your 4 total units for fall.

Q: Do I have to select a meal plan?
A: Every new student is automatically enrolled in the Spider Premium plan. Later in the summer you will be able to select a different plan through bannerweb. (They won’t be able to do this until their housing information is entered in to the system—definitely by the end of July.) More information here: http://newspiders.richmond.edu/checklist/dining.html

Q: When will I be notified about my academic advisor?
A: You will receive official notification in August and will be able to meet with your advisor in person during Orientation. Don’t forget that we are here to help you along with the summer faculty/staff advisors (http://newspiders.richmond.edu/summeradvising/advisors.html)

Q: When will I be able to look up classes that will be available in fall?
Transfer students should already be able to search for classes in bannerweb. All other students should have access beginning July 17th.

Q: How do I log into bannerweb?
A: Go to Bannerweb:  https://bannerweb.richmond.edu/
Regular login, Use University ID (not netID)
First-time password= your birth date: MMDDYY (six numbers)
It will say “re-enter your old PIN”- so again enter your birth date
Then you will be prompted to create your new PIN, (six characters, numbers or letters)  You will also have to create a recovery question. Be sure it’s something you’ll remember.  Any issues, contact the HelpDesk at helpdesk@richmond.edu or (804) 287-6400.

Civil Rights Movement trip starts TODAY!

Today I’m going to start my summer course– HIST 401: The Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. South, which is a three-week-long off-campus trip through nine southern states (VA, NC, SC, TN, AR, MS, GA, LA, AL). This is the second summer that Dr. Ooten and Dr. Daugherity organize this trip. We will have plenty of chances to visit musems, libraries, historical sites as well as to interview activists in the 1960s and 1970s. And we will be able to explore exciting cities like New Orleans and Birmingham, and try some food with southern flavor. Sounds interesting? I really cannot wait to begin my journey!!

The sad thing is, well, I won’t have regular access to the Internet and can’t guarantee  an in-time response to your questions. I promise to get back to you no later than June 8th (we will return to our campus by 2pm on that day).  You may also contact a faculty/staff advisor  if you’d like to know anything specific about a major/minor or a course.  And you may write to aarc@richmond.edu for a general question.

New spiders, for the 1000th time: Welcome to Richmond! Please do check your website regularly: newspiders.richmond.edu, for there is important new updates that you don’t want to miss…

Bye~I’ll write more about my trip/course when I come back!

Summer

All rigtht, after a humid and chilly weekend there finally comes a bright summery Tuesday! I’m still here on the campus, along with many other students, waiting for my summer course to begin. My post-final life has been simple and slow, as I’m spending most of my daytime in the Media Resource Center watching movies (by the way, I just found that MRC has a full collection of Pedro Almodóvar). Seen through the windows of Boatwright Library, Westhampton Lake looks gorgeous surrounded by trees and grass. Usually by 8pm I’d be walking alongside the lake to enjoy the afterglow–yes, the night arrives pretty late here.

Don’t worry about missing this summery view! Richmond has a long summer time stretching all the way into September, while the most stunningly beautiful season here–fall–as I believe–is yet to come.
