Eco-Spider Challenge Essay
The Eco-Spider designed by WILL (Women Involved in Living & Learning) is representative of both reusability and recyclability as well as some important aspects of what the WILL program stands for.
Our Eco-Spider is constructed from a reusable hula hoop to form the structure of the spider web, and the following recyclable items: Popsicle sticks for the web/labyrinth, newspapers for the Paper Mache body of the spider, magazine clippings for decoupage, and straws for the spider’s legs.
The idea behind the WILL Eco-Spider is based on a theory from WILL/Jepson guest speaker Alice Eagly who wrote “Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders.” This concept is furthered in the decoupage of positive images of women selected from this year’s Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women.
The WILL Eco-Spider is located inside in the Westhampton Deanery hanging in plain view, as if its web was spun from the ceiling, so those working or visiting the Deanery, a central place for Westhampton women, are reminded of the importance of female leadership.
As the women of WILL, we pride ourselves on generating theory into practice, and our Eco-spider symbolizes that core aspect of the program, as well as emphasizing the tradition of female leadership on the University of Richmond campus and in the larger community.
