Eco-Spider Challenge Essay
In an effort to promote environmental awareness, the Westhampton College Residence Life staff has created a sculpture of UR’s mascot using recycled materials obtained from the University’s recycling center, affectionately calling her “W.C.”. Not only is the spider sculpture a reminder of UR’s commitment to a greener campus, it has also emerged as a tribute to our commitment to one another. It is hoped that our entry will contribute to the celebratory atmosphere in honor of President Ayers’s inauguration and his own dedication to making the University a more environmentally conscious institution capable of extending its influence beyond our own modest community.
We sifted through recyclable materials, and intentionally chose those that likely came from a construction site: plastic drainage pipe, the top of an old trash can, a traffic cone that no longer stands upright, and a water container among others. We thought it an important tribute of appreciation, recognizing the current construction projects on campus. Through this project, our team came to the realization that someone else’s trash can be another’s treasure and the value of being good stewards of resources. Similar to the residence life job, our eco-spider demonstrates commitment to the community, an appropriate use of resources, and educating the women of Westhampton College. You can find “W.C.” perched on a second story ledge, over-looking the Deanery. Behind her is the new Lakeview residence hall, and in front she looks expectantly to the construction of the new Westhampton Center!
