Eco-Spider Challenge Essay

Our Eco-Spider, “Herbert Callahan the Greatest,” is symbolic of our enthusiastic, easy-going team mentality and our concern for environmental awareness on UR’s campus. While his name incorporates several key Frisbee plays, his construction was a group activity that helped us analyze ways in which our student body can make a difference.  At least half of our team is actively involved in environmental groups on campus.  We believe that recycling can be creative, fun, and playful and that everyone can help sustain the environment.

The materials we used to construct our spider emphasize two important tactics our campus can use to become more environmentally sustainable. The spider is constructed from plastic bags, water bottles, newspaper, cardboard, leftover party napkins, and old plastic containers.  We hope that all students, but especially the girls on our team, will make greater efforts to reuse and recycle these materials in the future.  The spider’s “web” is an old bike tire. Using a bicycle rather than a car is a great way to cut back on the energy that students use, especially when commuting to class or the intramural fields.

Working as campus community and unifying the many student organizations at our university will help us to make a difference.  We urge everyone to keep playing, to keep caring about each other, and to continue working enthusiastically to make UR an environmentally sustainable institution.
