Eco-Spider Challenge Essay

Student employees of the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness set out to show their support of our campus’ effort to ‘go green’ by building an Eco-Spider (who we so loving named Harry) out of items that are an everyday part of student life, but are not always recycled!  The body of our spider is created out of paper mache, mainly comprised of old Collegians.  The student newspaper is commonly read by Richmond students, but all too often it is thrown away instead of placed in the recycling bin.  By building Harry out of Collegians, we hoped to emphasize the recyclable nature of the newspaper.  Harry’s paper mache body is supplemental with various sporting equipment which otherwise may have been thrown in a landfill.  The legs are made of old aluminum camping tent polls and are topped off with reused football cleats and old baseball gloves.  Too often students only think of “recycling” as throwing a soda can in a blue bin, but it is so much more! Recycling is about giving something a new life, to let it go throw the cycle of use again.  This can be done in many creative ways, only one of which we’ve highlighted through building Harry.  We urge all students to get creative and think of new ways to use their old clothes, containers, papers, or anything else they would normally throw away.
