CCE Spider

The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement’s (CCE) Eco-Spider is a model for sustainability.  With a compact body stuffed with newspapers, plastic, and bubble wrap, the spider exhibits how “used” goods can be recycled to create art.  To create the happy façade of our Eco-Spider we used an old coke bottle, cutting out the eyes and mouth.  And for the eight wiry legs of our spider we chose to use scrap metal.  The CCE Eco-Spider supports itself, just as an environmentally sustainable community does.  On the back of our spider we chose to create a cape which displays the Bonner Center of Civic Engagement’s contributions to Richmond’s environmental health and community sustainability.  The cape exhibits the CCE’s efforts in urban revitalization in the Highland Park House Build, which ensures that community infrastructure finds life in new generations.  In Highland Park we also build social change through lasting relationships with the local community.  Through the creation of our Eco-Spider the Center for Civic Engagement also welcomes Dr. Edward Ayers as the University of Richmond’s new president.
