One representative from each Eco-Spider team must register the group by signing the Eco-Spider agreement. By registering, each team member agrees to the following Eco-Spider guidelines:

  • Eco-Spiders must be made of recyclable materials from the University of Richmond campus. The Facilities Department has agreed to work with teams to open the recycling shed to provide materials for the contest. Teams may not buy materials to recycle solely for the purpose of the contest. The judges reserve the right to disqualify Eco-Spiders made of inappropriate materials (i.e., a Spider prominently displaying beer cans). Words or symbols promoting a group or cause are prohibited.
  • Each team can apply on their application to receive up to $50 from the University to buy additional materials to construct or adorn the Eco- Spider. Receipts and proper documentation are required for reimbursement. Contact Tom Roberts at troberts@richmond.edu with questions about reimbursement.
  • Each team must submit a typed statement of no more than 250 words explaining the rationale behind the team’s Eco-Spider and its efforts to promote environmental awareness and sustainability through its creation. The text will be displayed on recycled paper with the spiders across campus.
  • Each team must also submit a photo of their Eco-Spider, a photo of the team with the Eco-Spider and a team roster.
  • Each team must work with administrators, faculty, and staff across campus to secure permission to display their Eco-Spider. Eco-Spiders displayed without appropriate permission will be disqualified. In order to be eligible to win, the Eco-Spider must be on public display by 9 p.m. on April 7 with the team’s essay, photo and team roster submitted to engage@richmond.edu.
  • Each team must register to enter the indoor or outdoor contest.
Indoor Eco-Spiders must be no larger than 3 x 3 x 3 feet. (In other words, it must be able to fit completely, in its display form, within a cube of those dimensions.) Outdoor Eco-Spiders must be no larger than 5 x 5 x 5 feet and should be constructed to withstand outdoor conditions including inclement weather.
  • Entries will be judged on creativity of design, aesthetic appeal of the Eco-Spider, environmental message conveyed in the creation, durability of the Eco-Spider, and originality and quality of the accompanying statement.

Questions? Write to engage@richmond.edu or stop by the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. Register today and take up the challenge to create an Eco-Spider and to recycle your trash. (Note: Recycling bins that contain non-recyclable trash in them do not go to the recycling shed. Do your part and make sure you separate trash from recyclable goods.) All team members are encouraged to attend an open house at the recycling shed on March 19 at 5:00 p.m. Attendees will learn about recycling on campus and how to make a difference. Eco-Spider teams will also have an opportunity to pick out recycled materials for the challenge.
