What is the Eco-Spider Challenge?
The Eco-Spider Challenge is a unique opportunity for student groups to help celebrate the Presidential Inauguration and to raise awareness about recycling. Each team is encouraged to participate in the competition by constructing a Eco-Spider out of recycled materials and displaying it in a location on campus.
When can we start?
We will accept applications for organizations from March 17th – April 1st. Eco-Spiders can be displayed across campus starting on April 7. All spiders must be in place by 9 p.m. on April 7 to qualify for the competition.
Who can participate?
Every student is encouraged to participate, whether with an organization they belong to, or with a group of friends. You can only be a captain to one team.
How does a group register?
Groups can register to create an Eco-Spider by visiting the Eco-Spider Challenge website.
Are there guidelines?
Yes. The criteria and guidelines for the project will be available on the website as well as on the challenge agreement every group must submit.
Are there funds available to help?
While the Eco-Spiders themselves will be made out of recycled materials collected on campus, a $50 stipend is available for materials like paint, adhesives and other decorations. A reimbursement form is available for download.
How do we find recycled materials?
While the recycling bins around campus are always available, the University Recycle Center will be open from 9am-7pm for use beginning March 17.
How and where do we display our Eco-Spiders?
All across campus! Each team must obtain permission from a facility administrator to display an Eco-Spider indoors or outdoors on campus.
Will prizes be awarded?
The winning organizations and groups will be recognized at the inauguration ceremony and their Eco-Spiders will be displayed in prominent locations on campus or in the Richmond community.
