Last week I visited New York with a group of students for the annual Spider Road Trip: Media & Communications. We took 22 students that were a mix of majors and class years and visited a variety of agencies and organizations that represented different aspects of the media & communications industries.
During the program, we visited the following organizations:
- MTV (Television / Advertising Sales Division)
- Random House (Book Publishing - Various Divisions Represented)
- Ogilvy & Mather (Advertising)
- McCann Erickson (Advertising)
- Hunter Public Relations
- Lead Dog Marketing Group (Full Service Marketing, Event Planning)
- Wall Street Journal (Newspaper / Advertising Sales Division)
I think the main themes that I got from our speakers were the following:
- Follow your passions, the money will follow you
- Work on your communications: writing & verbal. It is key.
- There is no luck - just hard work, networking and making your own opportunities
- Be flexible & adaptable because change is inevitable and you should expect it to happen
- Ask questions because it is okay NOT to know everything
- Key traits for success: Enthusiasm & Attitude
- Be as well rounded as you can be… learn from everything
- Listen
This program was full of new information for me, and it is my third year going. There is always something to learn when exploring these opportunities as long as you are open to it…
